Business value of SME digitalisation: when does it pay off more?

Small and medium enterprise (SME) digitalisation involves the reinforcement, modification, renewal of business models with help digital technologies. It is widely considered imperative for SMEs to stay relevant in age. Yet, little known about conditions under which SME improves performance IS literature. Guided by literature, we postulate that value – based on its impact improving financial firm dependent two factors are particularly due their smallness flexibility: radical orientation organisational rigidity. Using data from multiple waves surveys 2019–2020 archival Dutch SMEs, demonstrate positive improvement strongly depends characteristics. who oriented towards change more rigid disadvantaged attain lower returns digitalisation.
